Gatorade Spokesman Endorses Red Bull
In last night's 99-91 victory by the Minnesota Timberwolves over the Milwaukee Bucks, Kevin Garnett went nuts. He missed 8 1/2 minutes of playing time in order to get six stitches on his chin. But when he returned, he scored 10 straight points that proved to be the end for the Bucks. So to what does Garnett owe his burst of energy to? Gatorade, of course. "Sometimes the Gatorade works like Red Bull for me. You put sugar on top of sugar on top of sugar ... and I've already got sugar inside of me and it's like espresso." Sounds like a pretty innocuous quote, right? Until you read it as if you were an 18-year-old kid looking for energy in your next sporting event. If Gatorade sometimes works like Red Bull, why wouldn't you just use Red Bull every time? Gatorade is having to battle it out with the energy drinks in the locker rooms. The people at Gatorade can't control everything that comes out of the mouths of their endorsers, but as a Gatorade spokesman, Garnett should be careful with how he phrases things. On a side note, this isn't the first time he's attributed his game performance to Gatorade. After losing to the New Jersey Nets in March, he told a reporter that his lackluster play was due to "too much coffee and Gatorade." At the 2003 NBA All-Star Game, where Garnett won the MVP, he said, "I thought I drank too much Gatorade in the beginning."

Under Armour
Under Armour opened on the New York Stock Exchange at $13 on Friday, but rose 98 percent to $25.80 by the end of the day. It was the best first-day gain for a company that opened on the exchange since a firm named Transmeta opened five years ago. Despite the fact that many analysts called the current price overvalued, Under Armour rose again Monday to $26.18.

Imagine the advantage that future business leaders would have if they had the chance to develop business skills early on in their education. I think it's never too early to introduce students to business concepts. High school would be the perfect place to start. Read more about "The Donald's" view on Business education

Managing Big League Sports
The popularity of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) does not yet rival that of the NBA. Nevertheless, the league has received a great deal of media interest and boasts an enthusiastic, committed core of fans. Visit the WNBA web site to learn more about the league.

After scanning the site, click here and answer the following questions. Be sure to put your name in the answer for number one. Answer all questions, click submit, print work, and hand it for a classroom assignment grade.
Introduction of Production Work
Students will complete their warm-up and minimize the Keyboarding program. Students will then open MS Word.

Each day, students will have two warm-ups on the board. The first will be a question that the students will have to answer. The students should write for 5 minutes, whatever comes to mind. Some days they will not be able to answer the questions while on others they will be writing for a while. They can always go back and add at a later time if they think of something to say.
Students will create a folder in their H drive for their Keyboarding documents. Students will click
FILE>SAVE AS>NEW FOLDER(ICON)>H DRIVE>'KEYBOARDING'>OK

Students must save all their work in this drive-if they don't it will be hard to find, may be erased, and can lead to twice as much work. Students must make certain that they save to the H drive and not the C drive. Each week, I will be clearing out the C drive, and all work will be lost.

Students will begin their journal with the first question:
What do you like best about Thanksgiving break?

I will allow 5 minutes to respond free style. Once they have finished, students should type
SAVE AS>KEYBOARDING>(INITIALS)JOURNAL

Each day the student will open the document and add to it-they are not to create a new document each day.

T.O. Or Not T.O.
Where do you stand on one of the most controversial issues surrounding sports in the past decade? Do you side with the outspoken Pro-Bowl receiver Terrell Owens or the Super Bowl-less Philadelphia Eagles? Carefully consider all the factors in particular the time line of events that have transpired since the onset of the 05-06 NFL season and make a judgment. Write a one-page reaction as you perceive this pressing issue sweeping the sports nation. Again, take a step back, put your emotions aside and try to determine whether the punishment fits the crime for this unprecedented turn of events. Nine Business Principles for Phenomenal Brand Success
According to the Gatorade Rules, great brands must take intelligent measures to secure their image. Your task is to analyze all nine principles and for each one list a brand other than Gatorade that you think follows one of those particular principles. In total you should have nine different brands representing each of the "Gatorade Rules." For example you may think Pepsi follows rule #3 (Identify Drivers of the Business and Take Care of Them) because...
To Dunk or Not to Dunk
Next Sunday is the 20th anniversary of the Gatorade Dunk. Dressed To Thrill
As the NBA 2005-2006 season opens tonight, it will be a new day for the way players dress off the court. At first I had my doubts whether David Stern's brash dress code would blow up in his face or not, but seeing Kevin Garnett dressed to impress has led me to believe that Stern's plan will be a gem. I suspect NBA millionaires will rise to the occasion and take the NBA...GQ. Looking at it from a business perspective, this is a home run, or shall I say, slam dunk. Just as we thought the sports marketing industry had hit its peak, lo and behold a new segment of the market to target. It has been challenge for the NBA to reach the demographic of men older than 32, but here comes the opportunity to capture a niche market of thirty-something professionals who seek mentoring in casual and formal fashion. Yes, you can still use Lebron James to sell sneakers and apparel to the streetball-crazed youth, but who would have thought of endorsements for Armani and Prada from Shaq? Yes, I believe David Stern has done it again. Although controversial, he may have taken the world of professional sports to another level.

Show Me The Money
Jerry Maguire is a man who knows the score. As a top agent at Sports Management International, Jerry is unquestionably master of his universe. Trouble is, Jerry's mind, mouth and soul are usually on automatic pilot. A week after spontaneously writing a stirring, visionary mission statement for SMI entitled The Things We Think And Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business, he's unceremoniously fired. Stripped of his job and a good measure of his identity, the tenacious but hanging-by-a-thread Jerry is forced to start from scratch. He's joined on his journey to redemption by two unlikely allies: Rod Tidwell, a second-tier wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals; and Dorothy Boyd, a wistful 26-year-old single mother who departs her accountancy position with SMI for a very uncertain future with her new boss.

In our techno-global world are there room for ethics within the Sports Business industry? Please answer this question by submitting a comment. Your response should reflect on the movie and your present knowledge of the business world in one paragraph. When you are finished with that please take the Jerry Maguire movie quiz here. Finally you will read reviews of the movie here and then proceed to write your own review. Please type your review in MS Word. It should be one page double-spaced.
