Sliced bread and other marketing delights

In a world of too many options and too little time, our obvious choice is to ignore the ordinary stuff. Marketing guru Seth Godin spells out why, when it comes getting our attention, bad or bizarre ideas are more successful than boring ones. We are at the Western Suffolk BOCES Annual Technology Fair!! This is where schools from all over the island come and show the types of technology they use in their schools. Students set up booths and show how they use technology with their teachers. Examples of this would be the green screens from West Babylon, Smart Boards from Babylon and Apple Computers from HHHW and of course blogs in Smithtown.

Change Agent

Every so often in professional, collegiate, amateur and recreational sports there is controversy. Could be a new rule or a missed call, however good organizations try to be proactive and identify areas of discrepancy within their rules, procedures and policies instead of having to react when it becomes an issue. Questioning the status quo is a key characteristic to have as a leader.
With that being said, put yourself in the role of commissioner. Your group's task is to review the current system for any holes and/or potential problems. Address the current procedures and make recommendations for ones you think should be amended. Each team will be given a sport/league to evaluate. Write a commissioner's report addressing all the issues you have discussed.

Marbury's Starburys

For years, high-end basketball shoes, especially those endorsed by NBA stars, have been the ultimate status symbol for inner-city kids. Often priced in excess of $100, the shoes are unaffordable for many, which results in kids being robbed, beaten, and even killed for their sneakers. While few pro athletes have addressed this issue, New York Knicks star Stephon Marbury, who grew up in the hardscrabble Brooklyn projects, has tackled the problem head-on with an initiative on affordable athletic shoes. HBO Correspondent Bernard Goldberg examines this disturbing trend and profiles one athlete's campaign in this REAL SPORTS/Sports Illustrated collaboration.
Check out the Starbury line here and then answer the following questions in ms word.
  1. What is the message Stephon Marbury is trying to send?
  2. Do you think that this is a public relations move to rehabilitate his image? Explain.
  3. Illustrate why you would or would not wear a pair of Starburys.
  4. What impact do you think the recruitment of Ben Wallace as an endorser of Starbury's will have?
  5. Do you thing Starbury's are just wishful thinking or an idea whose time has come?
  6. What do you think Marbury means when he says he wants to change the culture?

What was the most interesting part of the trip for you? What kind of discussion did you have a dinner at home when asked about the trip?
You also have the option of creating a 10 question webquest (click here for an example) if you rather do that instead of the essay. Browse the garden website and and create hyperlinks in microsoft word to lead students to the answers of your questions by clicking the link you've provided.
