Sportsmarketability?
It is your turn to voice your expert opinion on who you think commands the marketplace. Which athlete do you believe can just plain sell! Remember, the sports marketing industry has radically changed the way businesses do business. You see Tiger endorsing Buick & Nike (along with a host of others), McNabb (and mom) pushing Campbell's chunky soup, and on and on. But what does your vision suggest? Who do you think is the most marketable athlete in the world? Click the word comment below and give me the name of an athlete and a brief reason as to why you think that person is the most marketable athlete right now.

Stadium Naming Rights
The New York Mets new stadium will not be named for a lawyer. Instead, it will be named after one of the world's largest financial firms after the team and Citigroup reached the most expensive stadium naming rights deal ever. The new stadium will be named CitiField after Citigroup, Inc. agreed to pay the Mets $20 million a year for 20 years, eclipsing the previous record deal for the Houston Texans' Reliant Stadium, for which Reliant Energy is paying $300 million over 32 years. The Mets new stadium will be built next to Shea Stadium in Flushing Meadows. It is scheduled to open in 2009. The facade of the new stadium, seen here, will resemble the old Ebbetts Field in Brooklyn, the fabled home of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Citifield will seat 45,000.

2. Work with your team developing stadium naming rights' deals with 5 pre-existing stadiums. For example: describe why you would change the name of The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (home of the Islanders) to something else involving a big business or corporation. So think big, but rationalize your decision in terms of brand, association and fan support. Submit a word document to the substitute teacher at the end of the period with 5 new naming deals and a brief description of each.

CAN YOU BE THE NEXT MARKET GURU?
A Historical Stock Jaunt: 1920's through WWII
The following lesson may give you an idea of how difficult it is to time the stock market. You will be given the chance to make decisions about investing in stocks at various times over the last 80 years. Even if you know some history of the U.S. stock market, you will likely still find it difficult to choose correctly every time.
In this lesson you will:
Analyze stock market returns within a historical context.
Explain the difference between a "buy and hold" versus a "market timing" strategy.
Explain why long-term investment horizons are important to investors.
Explain how certain key statistics (P/E ratio, Dividend Yield, and Interest rates) are used in estimating stock values.

The Sports Taboo
From The New Yorker article we read in class please answer the following discussion questions. Each answer should be at least a paragraph.

1. Sports Illustrated described Steve Kerr, who plays alongside Michael Jordan for the Chicago Bulls, as a "hard-working over- achiever," distinguished by his "work ethic and heady play" and by a shooting style "born of a million practice shots." Do you think that Kerr works harder at perfecting his game than Michael Jordan?

2. In a study reported in Science, 7/7/1995, Hedges and Nowell analyzed data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress program. They found that the variance of the scores for men was larger in all four areas: reading, mathematics, science, and writing. On average, men did better in math and science and women in reading and writing. Would you expect, under Gladwell's theory, differences in average athletic ability in different sports?

3. Does it seem reasonable to assume that genetic difference might affect the variance but not the average in something like mathematical or athletic ability.
